This week has been, quite frankly, a whirlwind, a downer, a disappointment, a comfort, and one heck of a surprise. My dad is falling apart and was in the hospital this week. There was more, oh so much more, but I’m not ready to process that all here.

I mention all this because is does have a bearing on the tooth fairy. Amelia lost another tooth this week. Loosing a tooth is always a thrill. The excitement stems not only from the thought of the tooth fairy coming, but the gap in the mouth that is left there for your tongue to explore and the feel of the new tooth coming up through the gum. Wow!

As usual, Amelia left her tooth with a note, a tiny bit of snack all encased in a left over plastic easter egg, under her pillow, fell asleep over her excitement all in anticipation. And…nothing. The next morning there was nothing. No egg, no note, no coins, no tooth – nothingness under the pillow. Ack! What could have happened? Later Amelia found part of the egg in the covers, the other part in a blanket on the floor with the crumbs of the snack. No tooth. No note. What was going on? She decided to pull out the spy glass and start investigating. Finally, she found her window partly open and in the screen she’d put a hole in, there was the note part in and part out. But there was nothing to explain what was going on. Hmm.

At breakfast there was talk of what had happened when I was loosing my last teeth and the fairies were kidnaped by a troll who asked for a ransom and eventually befriended their captor. But this did not seem likely to be history repeating itself. Hmm.

The next morning there was a note from the fairies saying they’d been taken captive by Un-Fair-E who was forcing them to work in his circus. This note was secreted to Amelia via Secret Squirrel Messenger. The P.S. stated that he had a weakness for easter eggs and mini marshmallows. Hmm. There was also a note left under her spy glass on her window ledge from Un-Fair-E saying he’d taken them and that he was expecting the fairies to make him lots of money.

It was almost too much for Amelia’s imagination to handle. She wrote a note to the fairies telling them that she would help and she wrote a note asking if she gave Un-Fair-E easter eggs and mini marshmallows he would release the fairies.

She got a new note from the fairies telling her they knew they could count on her to help, the the Un-Fair-E had put a spell on their wings so they could not fly away. THey also told her that Un-Fair-E had been a true fairy but he’d been naughty and left terrible gifts for children instead of nice ones and so he was sent away and became Un-Fair-E. There was later a note from Un-Fair-E that if the eggs were fancy and the marshmallows tasty he would release the fairies. Yay! So, mini marshmallows were found and brought home and the fanciest of the easter eggs were sacrificed to the release of the fairies and sleep came in hopes of freedom for the fairies and perhaps a change of heart of Un.

It worked! The next morning the fairies had left a note and four coins. The tooth had been returned to them and the Un-Fair-E left a note in which the handwriting changed from big print to a more fairy-like scrawl. The transformation was beginning thanks to Amelia. Whew!

I dare say the newly reformed Un-Fair-E will be returning the eggs at some point and the mini marshmallows may find their way back into the bag an egg at a time. But that’s another tale.
